Volunteer Spotlight - Erin Steenson
Break the Cycle thanks Erin Steenson for her dedication to ending teen dating violence. Erin, a professional actor with Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theater Programs, volunteered numerous hours to our production of The Yellow Dress, a one act play that portrays a young woman's experience with domestic violence.
Erin portrayed the main character, a young high school girl based on the life of Deana Brisbois who suffers from an abusive relationship. In addition to acting in the play, Erin also co-moderated the after-show discussion, helping young audience members identify with the terrible effects of dating violence.
Because of her powerful performance, Break the Cycle has received several requests to perform the play again and provide other education services. Thank you so much Erin for all that you do!
Teens Make Documentary
Break the Cycle has partnered with a local high school in Washington, DC to participate in its annual Community Action Project. Sophomores at César Chávez Public Charter School for Public Policy are currently working on a documentary to educate other teens about the dangers of domestic and dating violence. Look for it on our website in late-May.
Break the Cycle encourages teens to take action in their communities as part of the movement to end domestic violence. Starting in June, freshman students from the same school will participate in a two-week Social Change program focusing on our Safe Schools project. The teens will evaluate and give feedback on Break the Cycle’s initiative to create comprehensive teen dating violence policies for the DC’s public high schools.
Break the Cycle appreciates all of those who devote their time to educate others about the horrors of abuse. Further opportunities and ideas for youth to help stop the cycle of violence can be found on thesafespace.org.
